That was so informative... it told us all kinds of new information and tons of screenshots, even that amazing teaser trailer! OH WAIT!!! NOTHING. Nothing at all. Why is the ANET marketing team a bunch of losers? Seriously... I have all but given up on Guild Wars because they honestly believe the "no tell" policy is the best way to do things. News: it isn't. It is quite possibly the worst way to do things. At least attempt to keep your fanbase interested by showing concept art, a screenshot or 2 of the new engine... SOMETHING.
The development team for ANET is amazing, don't get me wrong.... but their marketing team has to be one of the worst in history. There is no real logic to not showing something about GW2. You could say that they don't want to make empty promises, and show something that might not be in the final game. Ok... so showing a screenshot of a random world or creature, or character, whatever just to show off the new graphics engine wouldn't do that... it would just perk people's interests. They are making a huge blunder by not actually giving out new information over the course of the last, what... 2 years? Stupid, stupid I tell ya!
Well, maybe they will get a clue and actually keep their fanbase engaged, but I find that highly doubtful considering it is the ANET marketing team we are dealing with.

Anet is owned by NCSoft, and the execs from Anet are now running NCSoft West in the US.
AION is NCSoft's next big MMO and they need Anet to tweak it for western audiences.
Until AION is released and fully marketed in the US, don't expect big thunder-stealing updates on GW2, especially since GW2 is so far from release. It doesn't make sense on any level.
As far as marketing is concerned, along with NCSoft, Anet's done a phenomenal sales and marketing job with a no-subscription mmo model.

Are you sure? I was reading the rest of the issue (like the previous) and I can't help to think "hey this feature of Wow 3.1 looks like it took inspiration from GW". I bet there's been stuff we don't know about that justify their approach.
This interview is empty, but I can see 2 reasons why Mike did it: 1) it keeps people informed that a GW2 is coming (you'd be surprised but many people have never heard of it!); 2) GW2 is not vaporware.
If we don't see anything about GW2 by Dec 31 2009, I can guarantee you that I'll be among the ones whining on the Guru thread .

Hey let them do what they want, if they feel not giving out GW2 info is beneficial to them then by all means. Though we don't want to hear it when people will continue to keep playing Aion,Diablo 3 and The Old Republic instead of GW2 because someone failed to keep those 5mill accounts in the loop. Just a loyal concerned GW gamer, nothing more.

The way he makes it sound, is that part of these "Big" updates like the one coming out this week are suppose to start filling in the 250 year gap between GW and GW2.
Quote:
Well there's 250 years of history between Guild Wars and Guild Wars 2, so there's lots of opportunity to be creative. Our Live team recently moved from a monthly schedule to one that focuses instead on doing 3-4 large updates a year. This gives us the chance to deliver some really meaty updates in terms of both content and functionality. You'll see the first on of these delivered this April for our fourth anniversary.
|
Wow just typing that got me psyched about Thursday's update. Does this also mean skill updates only every 3-4 months cause that was one of the few things that helped the game from becoming more stale that it already is. What is this "Meaty" content (Zaishen quests, menagerie, ect.) and how "Meaty" is it really going to be? Or would we possibly get some storyline updates in GW in the future maybe in the next year or 2 before they start working on GW2. Sarcasm meter full, end input phrase......

I'm interested in that he considers a new explorable area for housing pets, storage upgrades, and bonuses for old missions 'meaty'. That makes me wonder if there's more to the 4th Anniversary update, or if that's just the wrong phrase to use. I'll be pleasantly surprised if it's the latter.
It was an interested article but really nothing more. However I think this marks the first time that one of Arenanet's head people has given a general time frame for new GW2 information since they decided to switch to this silent running mode.
I have to agree with Rahja though. GW2's advertising the most interesting advertising tactic I've seen from any company.

Stop trying to steal ANET's thunder

Still wrong though. As I bought 3 chapters and the expansion and I am just 1 person. So, you cut that 5 million SALES down by 3/4 and they have maybe 1.5 million people that helped them make those sales. Right now they might have 750,000 players left if that. GROSS SALES does not equal to INDIVIDUAL ACCOUNTS, so, they can change the books any way they want to but they do not have 5 million customers.
